Her Story
Tracy immigrated to the United States from China at the age of 14. She faced many obstacles, such as language barriers, physical challenges, cultural differences, and adjustments to new environments. Despite those obstacles, she was motivated to achieve the American Dream.
A few months after coming to the United States, she went to Blythedale Children’s Hospital due to a condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), which caused multiple bone fractures. At Blythedale, she became aware of the field of psychology at the age of 15 when she was seeing a psychologist regularly and she diagnosed her with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). This encouraged her to research her own diagnosis and to become aware of her behaviors.
She became fascinated about mental health and behavioral analysis through learning about her diagnosis. Not only did she become aware of her behaviors, but she became aware of behaviors of other people as well. As a result of this interest, she decided to pursue a career in mental health counseling to gain a more substantial idea of the field and to make a difference by helping and inspiring others.
She went to Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn, NY and graduated with a Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters in Mental Health Counseling. During and after her time in LIU, she had spent many years in research, which shaped her perspective on the importance of mental health. As a research assistant, she was involved in a study that focused on adult victims of child sexual abuse. She learned how victims with no therapeutic intervention continued to be impacted by their experiences long after the initial trauma. They were greatly affected psychologically, and this affected their interpersonal relationships. In addition to her time gaining and understanding how trauma affects mental health functioning, she went to the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University and worked on the psychiatric epidemiology of two studies. There, she learned the importance of providing effective mental health counseling to underprivileged populations. Through these exciting experiences, she developed an interest in providing effective mental health counseling to underprivileged populations.
